Our friend Curtice told us a story of a ghost encounter he had back in the mid 1980s. He was refurbishing an old mansion in up state New York.
Curtice told us that he stayed in a bedroom of the mansion as he did the work. He would make his bed every morning and by the time he came back in the evening....the pillows would be on the floor and the blankets pulled back.
It spooked Curtice a little but he kept right on working in the mansion.
One day he was working on the steps to the third floor. There was a large crack on one of the steps. Curtice got a flashlight to look down inside. He saw what looked like a large paper doll. He pulled the board back....reached in the opening...grabbed the object with his fingers and pulled his arm back out.
His hand was empty but he was sure that the felt the thin cardboard in his fingers. He did the same thing a few more times and pulled out an empty hand. Curtice....being Curtice...got angry and ripped the whole step out. He grabbed what he thought was a paper doll. He looked it over and saw that it was an old card board lithograph Easter advertisement from the year 1899.
Curtice went back down the steps and to his room to put away his new find. He sat the Easter card on a dresser.....turned and screamed! A very old victorian dressed woman was right in his face! He could see the massive wrinkles and the ghostly empty eyes.
Curtice...again...being Curtice....screamed at the ghost "You bitch...the paper doll is mine...get the hell out of my room!" The ghost then faded slowly away.
You would have to know Curtice to believe what I just told you. He has the heart of a lion...I talked with him a few weeks back and he had knocked out a punk who pulled a knife on him. Curtice was raised on the streets of New York ....an old lady ghost wasn't going to push him around.
After Curtice told us the story, he gave the cardboard Easter girl to my wife Tammy. I messed with Tammy one night by saying,"I hope the old bat doesn't show up here looking for her Easter card?" Tammy didn't find the least bit of humor in it.
Curtice is like our little brother. We love him dearly and the stories he has told us about his life experiences are amazing. He tells them with such truth and intensity.
I've added a picture below of the Easter card. Sometimes...it is a little haunting to look at.
this is about 20 inches high.

Loved the read---whooooooo!!!!!
Tom your hubs never disappoint me there is always a feast to be had which I enjoy immensely
Your friend really does have the heart of a lion! I would have been very, very scared! That card is kind of creepy...I don't know if it is the story, or if it really is...I understand Tammy not liking the joke. LOL! :D
I love how you told Curt's story! And the picture does look a little creepy, doesn't it???lol
~~hugs~~
:)
Too cool, Tom. The little girl's face does have a haunting aspect. Thanks for sharing.
I've never liked clowns or dolls, and this doll's eyes are following me around !!! ooo, it's freaking me out!!! :0
whoa...spooky. I'm with Beth, not a big fan of dolls and old ones are even freakier...I laughed out loud at curtice's response to the ghost--that was great! I, however, would have peed my pants and thrown the card at her then run screaming out the door down the stairs and into my car where I would have slept that night.
Poetically depicted.
It's a beautiful card, but I'd have died a thousand deaths if that happened to me!!
What a great story! My goodness I think I would have screamed and run LOL! Or fallen over the dresser and broken something....probably me LOL
I pretty much always believe ghost stories because of a couple of sightings of this girl in my town who was my age but got killed up by the airport, but what I don't believe is that many other people would have had the same courage as your friend
Takes all kinds...i have no I dea what would have done...but I would have kept the card also I think is is amazing and so sweet..beautiful card with many meanings when I look at it...Thanks for the thrill and the treasure...:O) G-Ma Hugs
My mother in law collects things like that. She also had a room of old dolls. One night, the dolls freaked me out. Every time I turned to....leave them, one took a step towards me.
Excellent hub, I would have left the card behind for the "Old Lady" though :)
Almost the same thing happened with me years ago when I found an old pocket mirror lithographed with a naked lady on the back in my old house. We had the male ghost evicted when he got mad at my finding his old treasure.
I just loved this hub! Great job!
I came upon this story by chance and read the whole thing...and then I read all the comments. I can't believe that all these people found humor in the story or were impressed with how this Curtice handled this deceased woman. This card clearly meant something to this woman. I suppose it was a conquest and a story for this Curtice to be so cruel to an old woman that passed on. Maybe she is stuck here waitig for that very card to be given back to her. Maybe the one who sent this card to this woman will be waiting for Curtice and the woman who excepted it when they pass on.

Getting in the face of a ghost; boy your friend does have a lot of nerve. I guess he set her straight since you haven't had any spectres come to claim the card.
